The Moldy Peaches
“Nothing Came Out”
The Moldy Peaches song “Nothing Came Out”, was written by Kimya Dawson and Adam Green. The song talks about the struggle €an individual goes through when they have a crush on someone they know will never be theirs. The singer sings of all the ways she tried to express her emotions. She also tells all the simple little things she wishes she could do with the one she admires. As a big change in current music today all of the things she wants to do with her crush have nothing to do with sex. The singer just wants to ride bikes and stay up late watching cartoons.
Just because I don't say anything doesn't mean I don't like you I open my mouth and I try and I try but no words come out
These lyrics talk about when the singer tries her hardest to say the things she so desperately wants to say. In her mind this is her attempt to confront her crush but she's to scared of rejection. Seeing how she handles a situation like this speaks to everyone who has been to scared to take life by the horns.
Without 40oz of social grace I'm just an ass in the crack of humanity I'm just a huge manatee a huge manatee
By saying this the singer speaks out about her lack of confidence in social situations. She assumes that just because she has nothing to alter her real personality no one will like her. This further explains why she is having such a hard time confronting her crush. If she thinks without the aid of alcohol that she is just a fat ocean creature that shows a huge lack of confidence. These lyrics also bring out the point that she might have a poor self image. Saying that opens the listener up to the idea that her appearance might also be holding her back from her crush.
And besides your probably holding hands with some skinny pretty girl that likes to talk about bands and all I want to do is ride bikes with you and stay up late and watch cartoons
This line is what ties the whole song together, it answers almost every question that has been proposed. She justifies not trying harder to show her emotions by saying saying that he's probably already taken. Also she lets the listener know what she really wants even if she thinks theirs no chance. When she still talks about wanting to ride bikes and watch cartoons, means no matter what happens she is keeping her dream alive, no matter how hard she tries to justify forgetting it.
Duck Tales, shirt tails, Tale spin, Sailor Moon,
GI Joe, Robotech, Ron Jeremy, Schmoo.
I wanna watch cartons with you.
Josie and the Pussycats and Scooby Do,
I want you to watch cartoons with me.
He-man, Voltron and Hong-Kong-Fui
Then the singer just names off cartoons she wants to watch with her crush; not only being that they are cartoons but they are children's cartoons which expresses the level of innocence she wants from the relationship. She just wants her crush to be the person that she can share life with. These lyrics show that she desires more than just a person to sleep with.
I tried to ask you to your face,(phone rings,
and the singer giggles) but no words came out.
I put on my hood and walk away, that doesn't
mean that I don't like you.
This shows once again that the singer has a major lack of confidence in herself. She tried to muster the courage to tell her crush her true emotions, but once again was too scared of rejection. During this part of the song the phone begins to ring and the singer giggles, most likely representing that her attempt might not have been to her crushes face, but more likely to the receiver of a telephone. The phone ring may have represented the crush calling her to tell his emotions.
The chorus is played once again, but with the addition of a male voice. The addition of the male voice represents that her struggle might be shared with her crush. They both may be feeling the same way, but are prevented from telling each other because of a lack of the confidence shared by both of them.
After the chorus is over the you hear both the male and female singers say all the cartoons that they want to watch together. By having both the male and female singing at the same time represents that they both may have over come their fears. By over coming their fears they are now able to move on with life and share all the things that had been wanting to.
The song ends with the the singer saying “I'm just your average Thunder Cats ho”. This is a play on both the catch saying from the television show Thunder Cats, and a joke on the singer being a woman with low moral values. This lyric really ties up the song because the word “your” is used. The entire song has been a plead for her crush to want her and its never really explained if it works out. Until she mentions beings his average Thunder Cats ho, the question is answered.
